The Thing with Feathers

A bit more than a month ago, I was searching the net for inspiration for a title for a short story I had just written (I’m really bad at titles) and I found this poem by Emily Dickinson. I thought I’d share with you…

Hope is the Thing with Feathers
by Emily Dickinson

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

It is, I believe, our capacity for hope and love(though often frustrated), in the face of the coldest days that allows us to continue the desire to live.

So did you find your title?

This is one of the most beautiful poems I have ever read. Thank you so much for posting this.

Oh this is a wonderful title. And a lovely poem too!

I had a "rockin' morning, working on my novel. I'm back to writing every day and it's going great. I hope all your creative projects are too.

Many hugs, G

I, too, believe that, Mark... and, yes, I did, "The Thing with Feathers" seemed fine for many several reasons...

Hey, Paul, yes, it's beautiful. And it makes me happy, every time I read it. It's so nice to "see" you here!

It surely can, Bernard! :-)

Me too, Fireblossom.

LW, it's a good thing! :-)

Geraldine, there's so much hope in what we do... I'm glad you're feeling so energized! :-)
