A Duck Story

A girl-duck and a boy-duck are swimming leisurely on my pool, which is yet to be prepared for summer...

This way... That way...

...beauty in the mirror of the dark water...

Suddenly, a rival arrives...

The girl-duck promptly retreats to the safety of the lily of the valley yet to bloom... She waits... Do I detect a mischievous sparkle in her eye?

The boys have a game of war to play... Notice how the water around them tells their tale...

They both fly away. Then, after a while, one comes back. Peace has returned at last... Which one is he? I think it's the rival who's gone...

So beautiful, regardless...

By the way, Chick with a Quill turns eight today... :-)

Taking Turns

This pair of cardinals has been gracing my backyard for many years and I was very worried about them during the brutal cold we had a few days ago, minus 18 F or minus 36 F with the windchill...

But here they are, on this balmy day of 12 F... Big sigh of relief...

They're always taking turns. He eats, she watches. She eats, he watches. Could be also because there's not enough space for them to eat at the same time... Welcome back!

He eats...

She watches...
He watches...
She eats...

Bunny Time

Now it blinks here
Soft and fragrant
Daydreams in a bed of clover
Now it stretches
Into shadows
Onto crunchy forest floor
Clover
Moon
Then, Moon and clover
Brother bunny
You and me

(to a sweet bunny on this longest day of 2014)

First Snow in November

The Winter Queen is dancing
above the town
When she sways
and swirls
to the music
of angels
or of the spheres,
her ball gown
-regal as she is-
sheds pearls and diamonds
on her subjects
They make luxurious jackets
for trees and squirrels
and turn into hot kisses
on my eyelids

Happy Thanksgiving to all my American friends!!!

Scenes from My Garden While It Still Holds the Illusion of Summer

tiny bug,
                lovely bug
don’t come too near
I have to smile
                        -make me smile!
for you would drown in a tear

Summer in my Garden

strange things happen
i become smaller and smaller
sister to the small things

i scurry with chipmunks
hop with grasshoppers
scare crickets with my fiddle

i congregate with blackbirds
to steal the raspberries
before the children come out to play
then hide in a petal
to watch their eyes grow wide

i get drunk on petunias’ perfume
bumblebees invite me to dance

at dusk
i fall in love
with a butterfly

In my Garden

Little eerie kingdoms of beauty grace the shadows. I dream of being ant sized, about to walk through an enchanted forest,

gather fragrant pearls splattered on gowns of chlorophyll,

or hide unknown under a mallard’s wing and contemplate the world from the perspective of the spring sky.

Have a beautiful weekend, everyone!
